Graves' Disease, Gluten Sensitivity and Natural Relief

Gluten-Free Symbol

Did you know that patients with Graves' disease are far more likely to develop gluten sensitivity enteropathy (GSE or celiac disease or sprue) than people in the normal population?

Got a testimonial recently from a customer who had some great information regarding Gluten Sensitivity and Graves' Disease and how she removed Gluten from her diet.

Here is what she said:

"Dear Joe to add to your research into graves disease, I removed gluten from my diet and take the herb pau darco which helps cut candida growth from the gut. I take no other supplements.

My thyroid has stabilized and I find I have no trouble with it or my diet any more, can eat seafood, drink a coffee or have a glass of wine, I sleep well and have no health issues. it is a simple regime as there are plenty of gluten free breads, pastas etc on the market  and most restaurants cater for it.

This has been a simple and effective solution for me to something that was quite life threatening 4 years ago.  It may help others too."

- Best wishes Deborah

Why Does Gluten Sensitivity Affect Graves' Disease?

One of the reasons for the co-existence of these two disorders revolves around the fact that both disorders (and several other diseases) share the immune system genetic markers HLA B-8 and HLA DR3. Individuals having these genetic markers can develop one or more of a certain cluster of diseases associated with these genes.

Gluten Sensitivity is characterized by an abnormal immune response to gluten, the protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and oats. Although the cause is food intolerance, the ultimate response is autoimmune, with cells of the gastrointestinal tract producing autoantibodies.

Patients with concomitant autoimmune thyroid disease also have significantly lower levels of thyroid autoantibodies. With a tapering of their autoimmune response to gluten, the entire autoimmune mechanism is diminished. Patients with both disorders experience a reduction of both thyroid induced and gluten induced symptoms.

There are many great places to find Gluten Free foods, such as your nearest Health Food Store. Some gluten free foods can also be found at your nearest grocery store.

You should consult your doctor about getting testing for GSE. It may just be a reason why your thyroid problems are always flaring up.

Anna Abel @ 5:11 am

Hi I've had Graves Disease for about 4 years now. Doctors are always telling me that my case is radical in a sense due to the protrusion in my eyes and my fairly noticeable goiter. With my studies and research on graves disease I find that my case is not as drastic as I am lead to believe. Mostly all of my doctors have tried to influence me into going through the radioactive iodine treatment but many people tell me that this is not the way. I'm 19 but I was diagnosed when I was 15 and a freshman in high school although due to my appearance doctors suggested that I might have had the disease before. With money issues and other problems I didn't see the doctor as often as I should have. With a case file with CPS and doctor after doctor I felt as though my life in high school was a complete mess. Also due to my appearance having frog eyes or bug eyes left my confidence very low not helping my social involvement. I've just recently started a Gluten Free diet or rather life style change mainly because I've always been allergic to grass and for my graves disease, that along with botanical/dietary supplements, rice protein shakes, and my prescribed medication my graves disease issues have really depleted. I've just recently started this life style change and I'm already seeing results, my goiter is smaller, I have much more energy and I'm less irritable. I'm very happy with the impact of my new routine but I'm also wondering if there might be any remedies concerning my "Bug Eyes." They're really beginning to become a problem. The pain from me sleeping with my eyes open is starting to become more constant I know that eye drops might help but after an incident where while I was trying to put the eye drops in my eye literally felt like it had popped out of the socket (not entirely sure if that is physically possible) and my eye lids had disappeared behind my eye casing me extreme pain and discomfort. I wasn't quite sure if my eye was having an allergic reaction to the eye drops or if my eye was so inflamed that my eye lids where sucked behind them from me pulling them back to inject the eye drops but the pain was something I could never forget, lucky for me my eye returned back to normal but ever since then I've grown a fear of putting eye drops into my eyes. I'd really love to have normal eyes and be able to wear contacts again or to not have to pluck eyelashes out from them growing backwards or to just wakinh up in the morning with my eyes feeling refreshed and rejuvenated but I don't know how I can go about achieving this. Please help!!!!
